Activity to Prepare for Decision Day

As mentioned previously in this blog, Dr. Warner started preparing the class at the beginning of the semester to make the difficult decision of which organization we would give the money to. The first activity I explained as the ethical dilemma. We were presented with a very different situation yet the skills we needed to use were the same.

Dr. Warner had us individually rank the following letters with 1 being the letter that is most used in the English language and 10 being the letter least used: L, T, N, J, B, E, H, U, W, and C.

After individually ranking the letters, we then split up into small groups to rank the letters as a group. After deciding as a group what the ranking should be, we then came together as a class and had to all agree upon a ranking. One person from each group told the moderator, who was Amy Wolf in this instance, what the groups ranking was. After all the rankings were on the board, we looked for the commonalities among the rankings. We agreed upon the ranking for the ones that had similar rankings and moved on to discuss the numbers that had drastic differences. The different groups explained their reasoning for their ranking and after the different opinions were said, we made a decision.

At the end of the activity we did a debrief. This activity was similar in nature to the ethical dilemma but was also very different. This activity was more objective and there were no emotional ties to letters involved in the decision making process. We agreed that it was easier to make a decision when we didn't have an emotional investment in what was being decided. This activity further showed us how to work together as a class to make a decision even if everyone doesn't agree.

Below are a few pictures of the process.

In this picture, we have decided some of the rankings but still need to talk through the rankings that were very different from each other.

This is a picture of the class during the decision making process.

These are the final rankings!
